Clean, cozy and comfortable
snowman134Singapore, Singapore | Oct 11, 2015 | Trip type: Solo travel
Stayed in Wada longer than originally planned. It pretty much has all the things a backpacker would look for in a hostel. Location was awesome - just opposite West Street which is probably the most exciting place in Yangshuo. The directions given were very clear, so I didn't have to ask around to find the hostel - it's in an alley so you really have to look out for the signage and follow the directions given! Although it's in an alley, it didn't look shady and I definitely didn't feel unsafe even when returning to the hostel at midnight.
Atmosphere was the best part of it though, the cozy area is perfect for getting to know other backpackers, and I met fantastic people in this hostel. Rooms came with lockers, ensuite toilets, personal curtains, lights etc. What the promised on the website, they delivered. Oh, I also really liked that laundry is free (it even includes washing powder).
The Wada girls were extremely helpful too. I didn't have a chinese SIM card but needed to call various people almost everyday, and they kindly let me use the hostel's mobile phone, sometimes for up to an hour.
Good for a hostel!

Wada hostel is a relatively good one. It was clean and comfortable with tasty, cheap food on offer. They also offer an array of reasonably priced tours. The location is great for street food and bars and if you want to cycle to the countryside, just 5 minutes down the road and you will barely see a soul.
I had read many reviews beforehand that raved about the 'Wada girls' so I wanted to advise other travellers that the brilliant reviews are possibly due to a sign on the reception desk that states for every good review left for the Wada girls, they will be tipped by management. This didn't really sit right with me as it is guilting travellers to leave positive reviews. The Wada girls were helpful but no more so than in other Chinese hostels, remember you are in China and pleasantries are not common.
The main common area with the pool table cannot be used due to the damp problem and horrible smell but we still managed to meet other travellers in the small common area near reception.
I also wasn't too impressed that we were on the fifth floor with no lift. The hostel wasn't full so surely for 3 nights they could have placed us on a lower floor. Climbing 5 floors is fine but climbing 5 floors with a backpack, in 35 degree heat, 90% humidity and with no air con is a killer!
That being said I wouldn't hesitate in staying again but I would request a room lower down in advance.
Lots of stairs

Maybe a little hard to find at first but not a bad location, 2 mins from west street. Has a cool vibe, with a ground floor restaurant and chill out area. Checked out basement, would be very cool however very damp and smelly.
Not too great being on 5th floor with not lift, sounds lazy, but don't forget anything.
Room was great, recently refurbished and the bed was the most comfortable bed I had in China.
Wada girls were nice and helpful and food was very good and reasonable.
I would be happy going back.
Ticks All The Boxes

Ideal location: #5 bus stops almost outside the door to cart you to either north or south bus station; you're opposite Xi Jie (West Street) which is The Pedestrian Drag.
Friendly helpful Wada Girls at reception. Mandy, Wendy, Lisa, Flora: I salute you! Always a smile. I left a nice Thai shirt - from Koh Samui years ago - in the dorm at Guilin Central a couple of nights ago, so was understandably irked by my own carelessness. I needn't have been anxious: a simple phone call to sister and a wee rummage found my shirt. I'll collect it tomorrow. A typical example of their attentive efficient service which can be sadly lax at so many other hostels throughout China.
Ensuite dorms are topnotch standard: same quality as sister hostels in Guilin but better priced.
Pleasant open common area by reception, and Cozy Area downstairs: wee bar with pool table and comfy sofas, a cushy socialising area wanting at Guilin Central. Makes a significant difference: a travellers' hub that's more than a coffee shop. Not wishing to diss GC; just that it's more of a nice quality affordable small hotel.
Strong WiFi, board games, book exchange: again good qualities jn a hostel.
Yup - thank you ladies - this hostel ticks all the boxes.
Comfort little retreat in the middle of a bustling Tourist Centre

This hostel definitely deserves a 5 stars in its category(for backpackers)
We stayed in this hostel for 2 nights in early September. The most simple description to this hostel will be basic, cozy, comfortable, clean and affordable.
First, the location of the hostel is very strategic. It is located directly in front of the entrance to west street (just one pedestrian bridge away, no joke), and yet well-hidden behind the bustling commercial street of Pantao (aka the main road). We got there by local public transport, and the hostel is just few steps away from the bus stand, which make things very convenient for us. However, the signboard pointing into the alley where the hostel is located was not prominent, hence, we did ask the local for directions to get there. The alley looked very scary at first glance, but Wada was like a gem in the alley. We felt safe after stepping into the guesthouse, eliminating the insecure feeling while we were in the alley.
One special point about their staffing was that almost all the staff that we met were female. They called themselves the "Wada girls", I would like to say that it is kind of cool. They were the rare Yangshuo local who can converse in good English. Our experience with the Wada girls are very pleasant. We love their friendliness, as well as their pleasant charming smiling face, especially the red shirt girl that we often met when we came back late to the hostel for 2 consecutive night... (forgot her name).
The room is basic and clean. Beds are comfortable. The room also come with safety box. Television is not available in the room, I think the reason behind must be to allow more interaction between multinational guests in the house.
Regarding the food, I had tried their coffee, and it was of acceptable standard, which was quite alright for me. We didn't try their food, so can't comment much.
In conclusion, I would like to congratulate the owner of the hostel to be able to operate such fine hostel that really take good care of the young backpackers, and make us feel like home. The hostel can't be compared to grand 5 star hotel like Shangri-la or clubmed, but it is 5-star on its own.
Same goes to Wada Guilin, which we spent 1 night after being impressed in Wada Yangshuo. Both are the example of excellent youth hostel.
