I will be arriving earlier/later than the stated check-in time. Can I still check in?

Usually this is not a problem; you can arrange for an after-hours check-in with most hotels. However, you should always confirm with the hotel. You can use the "Special Requests" box in the booking process to inform them of your estimated arrival time in writing. It's important to remember that the property can't always accommodate these requests. It's always best to check with the property directly and in advance to avoid confusion. You can contact the hotel directly by calling them, the local telephone number you can get from Nehow's Local Guide after you finish the booking.

I want to check out after the stated check-out time. What should I do?

I want to check out after the stated check-out time. What should I do?

A late check-out can only be arranged with the hotel and usually depends on availability at the time of your stay. You can ask about the possibility at the front desk upon arrival.

  • Excellent hotel in central location but....
    Frédérique D
    Perigueux, France | Mar 19, 2018 | Trip type: Family

    My husband and I stayed at the Marriott City Centre in Shanghai for a week whilst on holidays there.

    All together it was a great experience:
    - great location in central Shanghai near shops, restaurants, cafés, subway station etc ...;
    - easy access to taxis (Pudong airport/hotel taxi fare costs approximately 200 RMB);
    - extremely spacious room and bathroom with all amenities;

    However, but not surprisingly, breakfast is too expensive even though it offers a beautiful variety of western and chinese options. My husband and I ended up having breakfast at Costa Café located next to the hotel, a MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE option, very pleasant too.

    We were faced with a problem that needs mentioning because we never got a gesture in return.

    Let me explain: we planned a 2 day trip to Suzhou by bullet train, leaving the Marriott Hotel early morning.

    We woke up early to give ourselves enough time to take a taxi to drop us off at the train station.
    The doormen were busy with lots of business people requesting taxis.
    Train tickets in hand, my husband and I showed the doorman our ticket, he (barely) acknowledged us (maybe because we were less “important” than the business clients in the queue?!). Once our taxi got there, the doorman put us in, spoke to the taxi driver and sent us off .......................
    TO THE AIRPORT!!!!! Which is at the opposite side of the train station.
    VERY long story short, we barely made it to the train station, we had to run with our bags the whole way, the train left 1 minute after we got on, we weren’t in our seats yet.
    We were pretty frustrated with the situation as we didn’t need that kind of stress on holidays.

    Once back from Suzhou, we spoke to the Marriott Hotel concierge about our unexpected experience. We were hoping for a note, a gesture from the management but we got none. Absolutely nothing!!!!

    Marriott standards, this is a big let down for us. We would have expected some kind of acknowledgment from Marriott of their mistake that made a holiday morning such a terrible experience. The concierge was somewhat apologetic. We expected more from Marriott which we assumed had high standards and would have been more sensitive to incidents like this in a country where very little english is spoken (my husband had to indicate to an older illiterate taxi driver with sign language we were looking for the train station not the airport).

  • Could have better check out process - disappointed
    Eleen C
    Singapore, Singapore | Mar 18, 2018 | Trip type: Business

    There is no systematic approach to room check in and out process for this hotel. After staying a few times in this hotel for the past 2 years, I have my first terrible experience when I checked out of this hotel today, on 17 March .

    Daisy at the reception for Marriott membership counter was adamant about servicing the customer who was ahead of me but was only interested in her phone than getting served. I skipped this person and went ahead see Daisy and told her I needed to check out now as I am getting late for my flight after waiting 20 mins for my turn to check out. However Daisy ignored me and served this customer who was infront of me, being completely righteous about who came in first in queue. Not a bad thing. But I found out the customer who was earlier only interested in her phone, was just checking into hotel.

    I was appalled at Daisy’s lack of empathy for my plight after sharing with her about me being almost late for my flight. She turned a deaf to my plead to be served first and went about in her own pace to complete her work and task for the woman ahead of me. Certainly there is room for a degree of understanding customers’ needs and make necessary adjustments or at the very least be communicative.

    I would not say it was poor service but I would say had Marriott staff been more emphatic, I would return the next time. However, I have decided to return to a recently renovated hotel nearby in my next trip.

    FrankSanders, General Manager at Shanghai Marriott Hotel City Centre, responded to this review

    Dear Eleen C,

    Thank you for taking the time to inform me of the challenges you encountered when settling your bill upon departure.

    Please do accept my apologies and I understand that this can be a frustrating experience especially when you are pressured by time to catch a plane or train. Rest assured that we will be discussing this with not only the associate you highlighted but with all Front Desk Agents.

    Our new Front Office Manager has also recognized occasional longer waits upon departure and has already added an additional early morning shift to the reception duty roster in order to better manage waiting times.

    Personally I prefer to settle my room bill the evening before departure which allows me to save some precious time the following morning. The evening shift receptionist can easily post the last night room rate on your statement and the following morning you simple walk out of the hotel. I hope this travel tip can also be useful to you.

    We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back on a next trip to Shanghai and showing you our improvements.

    Kind regards,

    Frank Sanders

    Great hotel with clean room and nice gym. Employees are very helpful to their guests, especially Concierge Leon, who has gone above needed when we were struggling with mobile payment with clear guidance and very nice attitude.

  • Loved this hotel
    Perth, Australia | Mar 16, 2018 | Trip type: Couples

    We had an executive room and could not believe the value for money. The breakfast and dinner buffets were great with the free drinks for a few hours each night, we found ourselves not eating outside the hotel. It’s very conveniently located, right near the People’s Square train station, and you can get to the hotel pretty much undercover the whole way by coming through the shopping centre. The room is beautiful, and we could walk to Peoples Park, then the Nanjing Pedestrian Mall down to the Bund, so really couldn’t get a better location. The staff that work there are all so friendly and we had no issues with finding staff that talk English. Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.
