I spent in this hotel 6 months (April-September 2015) while working in Shanghai. Apartment was well equipped with all the cutlery, dishes, bed linen, towels and washing machine etc. Wifi works fantastic after upgrade earlier this year. You don't even need vpn to access all foreign websites. They also provide good choice of tv channels for foreigners.
It is a very good place to stay either for a sightseeing visit or a longer period. Its location is just at Jiashan Rd metro station line 9, which gives you good connection to the rest of the city. Surrounding is safe. There's SML shopping centre within 5minute walk (or a 1 stop metro ride - Dapuqiao station) where you can find City Shop with imported foods and numerous restaurants - The Dinning Room was my favorite (best dim sum ever, try it).
Unfortunately during my whole stay they were redecorating some floors and the noise sometimes was uncomfortable. I also stayed at an older apartment which would need some soundproofing, but the place was kept clean. I've been there only during warmer months so before you decide to stay there at winter, check windows as they may not be well prepared for cold - but that's the only drawback of this place.
Somerset's biggest advantage is their staff. They always tried their best to help and make sure all is fine. They speak good English and smile, comparing to my colleagues' stories from their hotels I was lucky to stay there. I never felt that they try to tell me something just so that I walked away and not bothered them. They always provided answers and good services. I strongly recommend this place because of the location and extraordinary staff.
Great stay in Shanghai
RoyceL87Montreal, Canada | Sep 13, 2015
Three friends and I spent about a week in Shanghai and stayed at the Somerset. Overall it was great - good location and excellent price for the size of our room.
We booked a two bedroom unit through hotels.com and we were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a three bedroom unit. The rooms are more like apartments than hotels - there was a very large living area, kitchen, three bedrooms (one king, one queen and two singles) and two bathrooms (one off the master and one in the main area). There were also balconies on each side.
The room included two breakfasts which we used only once. It was a buffet with both western and Asian choices. Nothing amazing but good considering it was free. We also got 6 bottles of water a day in our room with the new towels, which was nice given that you're not supposed to drink tap water.
The rooms are cheaper right now because of the construction going on. We stayed on the 9th floor which was not yet renovated but it was still quite pleasant. With upgrades it will be very nice I'm sure. The noise was not too bad. There was some hammering here and there but nothing too disturbing in the mornings.
The hotel is also near some subway lines, but we never used it. Unlike the rest of Shanghai, it was pretty easy to get a cab on the main street around the corner. You can also ask the front desk to hail a cab but it was usually just faster to get one yourself.
The Somerset Xu Hui is highly recommended particularly with the promotional prices during renovations. No complaints.
We had a nice visit
Todd WJul 19, 2015 | Trip type: Family
We stayed in a newly renovated two bedroom. It is nice. The staff is very helpful. The apartment is clean in spite of the work going on to renovate the other floors.
There are a few annoyances with the renovation: no place to dry clothes, some of the cupboards in the kitchen cannot be opened due to appliances.
Considering a family of four, most of the other hotels would have required that we have two rooms and would have cost twice what Somerset cost. The location, right by the metro had use using Shanghai's easy to use transit system every day.
I would definite stay here again when visiting Shanghai.
Good Location and friendly service staff
mrsloppyShanghai, China | Jul 14, 2015 | Trip type: Couples
The location is ideal, within walking distance to Sun Moon Lake mall where restaurants are aplenty or the nearby Loft area which is just behind the apartment. It is also close by to Jiashan road, a charming street and leads down to Yongkang Road (nice cafe/bar area) and to mega mall iam/pm. And to donghu road, another area with cafe/bar. As for the rooms, was lucky to get a renovated united. The internet is erratic, works well on some days and completely not working at all. The plus is you don't need a VPN in the unit but like the internet, it's getting erratic. Lastly, the staff are friendly and cheerful. To be precise I meant the the service staff in the hotel like the housekeeping maids or staff deck in white top uniform. The front desk is kinda lack luster in this aspect, they are kinda flat. And interestingly I was told I don't stay here though I do recall myself checking in with my passport. Perhaps I look ghost like. Anyhow, it is a nice apartment in a good location if you are not too picky with the renovation noises (acceptable level for me) for now.
Ideal location, Excellent Wi-Fi access, Reasonable Rate
THH888Singapore, Singapore | Jun 14, 2015 | Trip type: Family
I booked a 2 room service apartment and although I did not get a renovated unit, I am happy with the room. Room is spacious and clean for the price you paid. The only setback is the bed and pillows are too soft. It would be good for the management to consider to change these items. Wi-fi access is excellent after the renovation. Business center and the dining area were nicely renovated. Location is ideal as it is near to the train station, shopping malls and many cafes around. However, there are some staff who are not so helpful and friendly. Nevertheless, I would not hesitate to return as one cannot expect 100% satisfaction on everything.
