Great hotel for family, highly recommend
Kurt MRedmond, Washington | Jul 27, 2018 | Trip type: Family
My family (wife, 15 & 12 year old daughters) spent a couple days in Shanghai on our way out of the country after visiting my wife’s family in Hefei. We have been traveling through Shanghai off and on for the past 25 years, but ever since we had children, it’s been a challenge finding a comfortable place to stay. I discovered the Ascott brand when looking for a place in Hefei and decided to give Shanghai a try. We decided on Somerset Xu Hui due to location and cost and overall it was a good choice.
We arrived Shanghai Hongqiao train station from Hefei around 1PM. After standing in a long line waiting for a taxi, it took about 35 minutes to get to the hotel. We timed it pretty good as traffic wasn’t too bad, right before rush hour. The hotel is not the easiest to find, but with some guidance from my wife and her smartphone, our driver found the hotel.
The hotel looks to have been built several years ago, definitely not brand new but it looks nice from the outside. Really crowded in front with cars, not a huge area to drop people off, but understand this is a built up neighborhood and space is at a premium. The hotel lobby is really small and kind of a strange layout – front desk + entry area, and then there is a seating area off to the right as you come in which is pretty large. It just seemed like the space could have been better utilized, perhaps easier said than done.
The check-in process was seamless, the hotel had all the paperwork prepared and after signing a few documents, taking photocopies of our passports, and swiping my credit card, we were off to our room on the 10th floor. I asked for a higher floor, but unfortunately there was nothing available. There are two elevators, both tiny, both pretty slow. The four of us + bags completely filled the elevator.
We booked a 2 bedroom apartment which is exactly why we stayed at this hotel. Most hotel rooms in China cannot accommodate 4 people and with our kids getting older, we definitely need the space. We were on the 10th floor right outside the elevators which was not what we had hoped for, but there really aren’t many rooms on each floor, and we did not notice any additional noise from this location.
The apartment was a little bit of a letdown after our stay at Somerset Swan Lake in Hefei. The pictures on the website made the apartment look fresh and modern (like Hefei), but in reality although it had some work done, it was a little long in the tooth. Perhaps there are some apartments that have been renovated, but we did not stay in one. With that said, the space was more than enough for our family which is why we wanted to stay here.
After you walk in the door you are in the main room with a sofa, TV and doors to a small balcony. To the left is a bedroom which had two twin beds and a TV and my kids slept in that room. To the right is the kitchen (definitely felt old) with table and chairs, stove top, microwave, washing machine, etc., and just past there were two bathrooms and the master bedroom. A little strange that the bathrooms were side by side, but it was critical to have two so it was functional and worked for us. The bathroom associated with the master bedroom had a bidet which is a little unique outside Europe & Asia, so my youngest was quite excited to see that!
There were definitely enough outlets to plug in all your devices along with plenty of storage for bags, clothes, etc. One minor irritant was the TV – we wanted to watch World Cup on CCTV and the way the regular TV is set up, no CCTV. You had to use another box to gain access and the instructions were terrible. We had maintenance come up on two separate occasions to help us find the game.
The hotel is in the Xu Hui district in Shanghai in what was the French Concession. The location was one of the top considerations for us, the neighborhood is fantastic with tree lined streets and plenty of restaurants and shops. A slight drawback is getting a ride, you have to walk a few hundred feet out of the hotel to get out to a main artery to catch a taxi. I believe there is also a subway station within walking distance as well. Also close by is Shanghai Culture Square Theatre which to our great surprise had a run of Kinky Boots starting toward the end of July!
Four breakfast buffets were included in our rate as we stayed at a 2 bedroom apartment, and it was a little disappointing. Small dining area, limited food selection, and the room was hot as they did not run the air conditioning. They did offer to fix a cup of coffee or cook eggs as you came in to the dining room and that was very nice. There was a mix of both Chinese and Western foods and there was always something decent to eat.
We verified all the charges and everything matched up with what we expected. If paying with foreign credit card, ask to pay in RMB and not in USD – credit card exchange rate is much better than the hotel.
Based on our experience with this hotel, I would be more than happy to return to stay once again. I do think that the apartment needs some updating, that would turn this into a top notch hotel. However taking into account everything about the hotel, I would highly recommend staying here!
Such a spacious hotel, good for work and family

Was stay here during my recent work to Shanghai and its great place to stay with, easy accesible from Nanjing Road, and closed to subway. you can find several restaurant available by walking distance. The only way to improve is the capability of staff to speak english properly.

Family trip...older kids

We hired a driver to take us to this apartment from the airport, I am glad we did as it is tucked away and I think would be hard to locate. We stayed in a 3 bedroom apartment for 8 days, it was great, cannot be compared to some plush western topline hotel..but we have visited China before and this place exceeded our expectations. The apartment was a great size, good little kitchen (although we only used the washing machine, washed well and powder was provided. ) Linen was good quality, and beds pretty comfortable and huge in size, california king in master bedroom, plus a bathroom and separate shower room/bath attached. Another bathroom with just shower for the kids.Other bedrooms had twin beds and a large double. TheTVs worked although we didnt use. Balconies x 2. Breakfast was included in our deal (expedia) and was alright. Basic continental style, and the option to order eggs.omelette or the noodle dish of the day.
Staff were lovely, some english spoken at reception but we used a translation app a couple of times. Housekeeping staff were great, even washed up for us (wow) and always supplied fresh bottles of water. Wifi slow but OK.
Area suited us well, over the road from Jiashan Rd Metro which we used daily to get all round Shanghai, easy and inexpensive. Lovely cheap bakeries and dumpling houses in the area, we walked to an area with a French Creperie one evening (needed google maps plus VPN ) which showed us a whole different side to the district, expensive area, lots of eateries, so we didnt return but is obviously where the expats and wealthier people frequent.
We walked to Daupuquio a couple of evenings for dinner (10 min walk or 1 stop on the metro...huge Mall) the food court is in the basement and is extensive beyond belief and cheap to eat at many restaurants. Also a supermarket there that caters to europeans. Our son went to Costa Coffee daily which is nextdoor.
If you are happy to get the metro (or taxis) this location is great. If you want to be in the centre.then this isnt the right place.
Good overall but there's room for improvement
MCHTorontoToronto | Apr 16, 2018 | Trip type: Couples
I stayed in SH for 4 days with my husband and another couple. The apartment was ideal for size, and it had 2 rooms and 2 bathrooms.
In general we got value for the price though there were small things that could made our experience better:-
I didn’t know swim caps were required in the pool. There were caps for sale at the club house but I could have brought my own if I were notified beforehand, didn't want to be forced without an option.
The washer dryer in our kitchen wasn’t user friendly, I had to call the front desk to send up a staff to show me.
My credit card was charged twice after I returned home, I had to spend time dealing with emails back and forth.
The furniture was a bit worn out, hope they schedule for a renovation soon.
The building was situated in a residential area, right across from the subway, but eateries were closed early, not that you could go downstairs and have lots of choices after 8pm.
The breakfast room was great, attentive service and good quality food, both in western and Chinese style.
All in all, Somerset wasn't bad, just one more step and they would be great.Tina L, Manager at Somerset Xu Hui Shanghai, responded to this review
