I will be arriving earlier/later than the stated check-in time. Can I still check in?

I will be arriving earlier/later than the stated check-in time. Can I still check in?

Usually this is not a problem; you can arrange for an after-hours check-in with most hotels. However, you should always confirm with the hotel. You can use the "Special Requests" box in the booking process to inform them of your estimated arrival time in writing. It's important to remember that the property can't always accommodate these requests. It's always best to check with the property directly and in advance to avoid confusion. You can contact the hotel directly by calling them, the local telephone number you can get from Nehow's Local Guide after you finish the booking.

I want to check out after the stated check-out time. What should I do?

I want to check out after the stated check-out time. What should I do?

A late check-out can only be arranged with the hotel and usually depends on availability at the time of your stay. You can ask about the possibility at the front desk upon arrival.

  • Rooms are good size for number of stars
Javea, Spain | Nov 12, 2017 | Trip type: Family

After staying in a cramped 4 star in Shang Hai this is far more spacious. The staff are really friendly and go out of their way to help you. Breakfast is a bit more basic, but you can still get your bacon and eggs and toast. Beds are a tat firm, but not impossible. Good position and there is a nice shopping mall nearby round the corner.

  • Desperately seeking attention
Amsterdam, The Netherlands | Sep 20, 2017 | Trip type: Solo travel

Not to be confused with the genuine five star Gardens Hotel, this 3.5* option is over rated by at least half a star for sure, although the Chinese hotel star system is a bit baffling. This property is 3* at best and even that might be questionable.

The location is perfectly fine, although it's a little bit of a hike to most of the sights in Suzhou. However, buses run from outside the door to pretty much anywhere you'd want to see for RMB1 or RMB2. There is also the Shilu Metro Station on Red Line 1 relatively close by, but that's a much longer hike on foot than it appears on any maps. You'd take Exit 1 from the metro, which is a very, very steep set of stairs and thus you may already be worn out before you then cross the bridge and take a left onto Liuyuan Road, with about a 15 minute walk to the hotel door.

Once inside, you definitely get a sense of oppulence and grandeur. The marble lobby is large and the smartly uniformed staff are very polite and welcoming. The rooms spread out from the lobby area in covered walk ways surrounding ornamental pools, all of which are quite charming. However, the impressive lobby and common areas mask a run down property that really needs updating.

I booked a non-smoking room and when I checked in, they confirmed whether I wanted smoking or non-smoking. So I confirmed NS, only to be shown to a smoking room. They took me to another, which was also smoking. So the porter called reception, only to be told the NS rooms were sold out. So why even offer? Weird.

The rooms are spacious, but old. The wall paper is peeling off the wall and is stained in places with damp. The wood furniture is all scratched and worn. The drapes are old, greying and don't pull easily. The bed is hard, but the linens spotlessly clean, if somewhat scratchy. There were twin beds in my room, but they were larger than singles.

There's a kettle, tea, safe, umbrella (thankfully!!), 1L of bottled water per day and a flat screen TV. Excellent WIFI throughout the hotel. The aircon/heat works very well. There is also a mosquito coil and you will really need it. The ornamental pools create the perfect breeding grounds for the pesky buggers, as does the city canal structure in general. Even in the cooler months, you will be bitten. This is partly because the hotel props the outside doors open constantly. My room was dotted with squashed mosquitos all over the walls.

The bathroom is old, with a tub and shower, but the sink unit wouldn't hold water. There's a dispenser of shower gel nailed to the wall, but they do provide a toothbrush and hair dryer. The towels were clean, but a bit tired.

Breakfast is served in a huge dining room, with old furnishings and very grubby, tired linens. There is a huge selection of Chinese food, but very little that will tempt Westerners. Boiled & fried eggs as well as fried spam, breads, oranges is about it. Tea, coffee and water juice also offered, but it's all geared to the Chinese audience. I just don't like pickles and stir fried noodles for breakfast. The selection of steamed buns is amazing. It's all help yourself, and the tables are never cleared, so finding a spot is tricky.

The hotel offers very good rates, but based on what you get, so they should. It clearly used to be quite a grand hotel and with the right TLC, it could be again. For now, it's seriously lacking and the rooms need a major facelift. I suppose that will raise the rates if they get round to it.

  • Terrible location but nice hotel
Benahavis, Spain | May 12, 2017 | Trip type: Solo travel

the hotel is attractive and quiet. The room was quie good. They turned my a/c off on first day but after a call to reception, it came back on as if a miracle. The staff are very nice.. Everything is clean. The dinner was OK (are not all dinners here') The breakfast was semi-awful.

  • Memorable Stay!
Macau, China | Apr 16, 2017 | Trip type: Friends getaway

Stayed here for two nights with the college delegation in January 2016, and it was truly a memorable stay. Built like a real Chinese garden, comfortable to stay in. Rooms were designed in classic Eastern style and equipped with everything you need. Excellent handmade noodles of the buffet breakfast, classic Suzhou style. I had a great time there and would definitely love to come back someday!

  • Clean, comfy, modern hotel near Lingering Garden
San Francisco, California | Sep 20, 2015 | Trip type: Solo travel

Loved my two day stay at Garden Hotel. My room was very quiet, comfortable, spacious and clean. Appreciated the extra touches like bathrobe and slippers. The hotel is about a 4 minute walk to Lingering Garden and 15 minute walk to entrance of old town Suzhou (and a Starbucks). There are a couple shops down the block on Liuyuan Road if you're looking for snacks, or in the opposite direction there's an excellent Beef Noodle Soup restaurant in the ground level of the shopping center near KFC.
One thing to note, though the staff can be helpful, only one or two speak English.
