    Forbidden City

    About 3 hours

Experience a tour that focuses on the symbolism and orientation of architecture of the Forbidden City. With a Chinese historian as your guide you’ll spend 3 hours walking around the numerous courtyards and gates that run from the Emperor's Throne out through the southernmost gate of the city and into the world beyond. Discover what life was like in the city for the Emperor and his officials. Beginning in Tiananmen Square at the Gate of Heavenly Peace, your tour will venture inside the Forbidden City's walls to discover its many courtyards and pavilions. You’ll walk through the Gate of Supreme Harmony to see the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Forbidden City's largest construction, which features intricately carved and painted walls. Depending on the interests of your group, the tour may include a visit to the Forbidden City's outer palaces including the Hall of Middle Harmony and the Hall of Preserving Harmony. The Cinnabar Stone Staircase, the Eastern Palaces and the recently remodeled Ningshou Palace are also possible stops along the way. The tour ends with a visit to the Inner Palaces, where you’ll learn about the Ming Emperors and the Hall of Mental Cultivation–the residence of the last Manchu rulers.
